मागासांचे सामाजिक स्थान आणि उत्थान

स्वातंत्र्यानंतर समानतेचे तत्त्व अंगिकारण्यामागे समाजातील मागास घटकांना मुख्य प्रवाहात येण्याची संधी मिळावी, त्यांना सर्वार्थाने सामाजिक न्याय मिळावा, हा उद्देश होता. आज जमिनीवरील वास्तव डोळसपणे पाहिले, तर हा उद्देश पूर्णपणे साध्य झाला आहे का, असा प्रश्न पडल्याशिवाय राहात नाही. याचे पहिले कारण म्हणजे, स्वातंत्र्यापासून समाजकारण आणि राजकारणातील मागास समाजाच्या सहभागाचे एक प्रारूप निर्माण झाले होते.

मागास घटकांचे नेते त्यांच्या मतांची जबबदारी घेतील आणि सत्तेची काही पदे या नेत्यांना देऊन त्यांना ताब्यात ठेवता येते, हे राजकीय पक्षांच्या लक्षात आले. यातून मागास, वंचित, पीडित समाजाचे कल्याण न होता त्यांच्या काही मोजक्या नेत्यांचेच भले झाले. पुढे हे प्रारूप इतक्या टोकाला गेले की, कुठलाही पक्ष सत्तेत असला, तरी त्याच्या बाजूने जाऊन आपले स्थान टिकवून ठेवणे, एवढेच काय ते मागासांच्या नेतृत्वाचे एकमेव ध्येय उरले.

मागास समाजाच्या व्यक्तीला मोठ्या पदावर बसवून सगळ्या समाजाचे कल्याण होईल, हे कोठे ठरले आहे? आणि तसे सांगून आम्हाला मते मागू नयेत, हे या बांधवांनी सर्व प्रमुख पक्षांना ठणकावून सांगायला हवे. द्रौपदी मुर्मू या आपल्या राष्ट्रपती बनल्या, याचा साऱ्या देशाला आनंद आणि अभिमानही आहे. पण, राष्ट्रपतिपदी विराजमान झाल्यावरही, त्या आदिवासी असल्याचा उल्लेख सतत का केला जातो? आदिवासी समाजातील व्यक्ती राष्ट्रपती झाली, याचे कौतुक पुन्हा पुन्हा करणे, हाही त्या पदाचा एका अर्थाने अवमान नव्हे का?

खरे तर आदिवासी, मागास बांधवांना उच्चपदाची संधी मिळण्यात गैर काय आहे? या गोष्टी तर स्वाभाविकपणे व्हायलाच हव्यात ना! संविधान आणि सामाजिक न्यायाचे तत्त्व स्वीकारुन पंचाहत्तर वर्षे उलटल्यावरही हे होणार नसेल आणि त्याचे कौतुकच साजरे करण्यात आम्ही धन्यता मानत असू, तर आपली लोकशाही प्रगल्भ झाली, असे म्हणता येईल का? मुळातच आदिवासी किंवा इतर कुठल्याही मागास व्यक्ती देशाच्या सर्वोच्चपदी विराजमान झाली म्हणून त्या समाजाचे सगळे प्रश्न चुटकीसरशी सुटत नाहीत, हे समजून घ्यायला हवे.

लोकशाहीतील न्यायाचा हक्क शाबूत ठेवण्यासाठी मागास समाजांनी सर्वप्रथम आपल्या मतांची एकगठ्ठा मालकी मागास नेतृत्वाला देणे पूर्णपणे बंद करावे, म्हणजे तिचा राजकीय सौदेबाजीसाठी उपयोग होणार नाही. सामाजिक न्यायासोबत इतर सर्व धोरणे तपासूनच आदिवासी, मागास, वंचित समाजाने मतदान करावे. सर्वाधिक भ्रष्टाचार मागास समाजासाठीच्या योजना आणि संबंधित विभागांमध्ये होतो. उदाहरणच द्यायचे तर अण्णाभाऊ साठे आर्थिक विकास महामंडळातील भ्रष्टाचाराचे देता येईल. या मोठ्या प्रकरणाचा निकाल अजूनही लागलेला नाही.

मागास समाजासाठी असलेल्या योजनांचे नेमके काय होते? हजारो कोटींचा निधी जाहीर आणि मंजूर होतो, तरीही मागास समाजातील असंख्य लोकांचे उत्थान का होत नाही? या योजनांतील भ्रष्टाचार रोखून त्या खऱ्या लाभार्थ्यांपर्यंत पोहोचवण्यासाठी कार्य करणारी एक तटस्थ संस्था आवश्यक आहे. एक काळ होता जेव्हा साहित्य, गाणी, स्फूर्तिगीते, जलसे यांनी मागास समाजाला जागृत करण्याचे काम केले. पण, आता तेवढ्यात अडकून चालणार नाही. डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकरांनी दिलेल्या संदेशातील ‘शिका आणि संघटित व्हा’ हे दोन टप्पे साध्य झाले आहेत. एका वर्गातील मागास बांधवांचा संघर्षही संपला आहे. पण, संघर्ष न संपलेला एक मोठा वर्ग आहे. त्यामुळे त्यांच्यासाठी ‘संघर्ष करा’ या संदेशाच्या बरोबरीने प्रत्यक्षात जमिनीवर काम करण्याचे ध्येयही ठेवावे लागेल.

आदिवासी, मागास घटकांसाठी याच वर्गातील नेतृत्वाने काम करावे, हा संकेतही मोडीत निघायला हवा. या समाजांच्या भल्याचा विचार करणे ही आपल्या प्रत्येकाची जबाबदारी आहे. अन्य जाती-समुदायातील एखादी व्यक्ती मागास समाजाच्या कल्याणाच्या विचाराने झपाटलेली असेल, तर प्रसंगी तिचे नेतृत्वही मागास बांधवांनी स्वीकारायला हवे. किंबहुना स्त्रीवादी संघटनांनाही जशी समतेचा पुरस्कार करणाऱ्या पुरुषांची साथ मिळते, त्याप्रमाणे सर्व समाजांच्या सहभागाशिवाय मागास समाजाचा विकास होणे शक्य नाही. ज्यांना आपली वैचारिक भूमिका पटते त्यांच्यापेक्षा ज्यांना ती पटत नाही, अशांना आपल्या बाजूने वळवणे, हे कोणत्याही चळवळीचे मुख्य ध्येय असते.

मागास बांधवांसाठीच्या चळवळींना वर्षानुवर्षे डॉ. बाबासाहेबांविषयीच्या अस्मितेभोवती खेळी करून गुंतवून ठेवले गेले. डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर हे इतके थोर होते की, त्यांचा अभिमान भारतात जन्म घेणाऱ्या प्रत्येकाला असायलाच हवा. त्यामुळे अन्य समाजही खांद्याला खांदा लावून सोबत यावेत, या दृष्टीने मागासांच्या चळवळींची पुनर्रचना करावी लागेल. संविधानाच्या प्रती छापण्यासाठी सरकार दरवर्षी कोट्यवधींचा खर्च करते. पण, त्यातील काही भाग सामाजिक न्याय, समता आणि मागास समाजांना मुख्य प्रवाहात आणण्यासाठी प्रामाणिकपणे वापरला, तर वेगळ्या चळवळींची कदाचित गरजही पडणार नाही.

जसा सौंदर्य या शब्दाचा नेमका अर्थ शब्दांत पकडता येत नाही तसाच ‘ब्रेड’ शब्दाचा अर्थ सहजपणे लावणे कुणालाच शक्य झालेले नाही. बँडचा अर्थ जिथे संपतो तिथून पुढे सुरू होणारा शब्द म्हणजे ‘कल्ट ब्रँड’. जो ब्रँड उभा राहताना त्याच्या छताखाली येणाऱ्यांची त्यात खोलवर, दीर्घकालीन मानसिक गुंतवणूक असते, ती पिढ्या दर पिढ्या वाढत जाते, ज्याची व्याप्ती शोधताना हा बँड सुरू कुठून होतोय आणि त्याचा शेवटचा धागा आहे कुठे, याचा थांगपत्ता लागत नाही, ज्याच्या यशात एक गर्भित गूढता असते आणि जो सार्वकालिक असतो तो ‘कल्ट ब्रेड’. वैद्यकीयच नव्हे तर एकूणच शिक्षण क्षेत्रात कल्ट बँडचे उदाहरण द्यायचे झाल्यास सर्वोत्तम उदाहरण म्हणजे ‘केईएम’. आणि या केईएमचा मुकूट म्हणजे सेठ जी. एस. मेडिकल कॉलेज अर्थात गोरधनदास सुंदरदास मेडिकल कॉलेज, वैद्यकीय शिक्षण सुरू होताना तुम्ही या वास्तूत प्रवेश करता तिथे एक ब्रीदवाक्य प्रवेशद्वारावर तुमचे लक्ष वेधून घेते. ते ब्रीद आहे Genius alone lives, all else is mortal अर्थात ‘तल्लख विचारशील बुद्धिमत्ता फक्त तेवढी अमर आहे, बाकी सर्व मर्त्य आहे.’ प्रवेश करताना पहिल्या दिवशी पहिल्या क्षणाला या वाक्यापासून केईएम तुमचा नियोजनबद्ध रीतसर बौद्धिक, मानसिक जिनोसाइड घडवून आणते.

स्वतःला रथी-महारथी समजणाऱ्या प्रत्येक विद्यार्थ्यांचे पहिल्या वर्षात जे बौद्धिक गर्वहरण होते त्यातून ‘भांडे भरून घेण्यासाठी ते आधी रिते करावे लागते’ ही पहिली जाणीव मिसूरड फुटताना केईएम करून देते, ती म्हातारपणी दात पडेपर्यंत तशीच राहते. म्हणून केईएममधून बाहेर पडलेले कधी कोणाहीमुळे प्रभावित होत नाहीत. त्यामुळेच ‘केईमाईट्स’ हे उद्दाम, गर्विष्ठ अशी प्रतिमा तयार होते. मुळात ते उद्दामपणापेक्षा बौद्धिक वैराग्य असते.

सन १८४५ मध्ये जेजे रुग्णालय व ग्रॅन्ट मेडिकल कॉलेज हे पहिले वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालय सुरू झाले. इथून शिकलेले भारतीय पुढे इंग्लंडमध्ये पदव्युत्तर शिक्षण घेऊन भारतात परतले तेव्हा भारतीय प्राध्यापकांना जेजेमध्ये मज्जाव करण्यात आला. त्यातून भारतीयांनी सुरू केलेले व जिथे भारतीयच शिकवतील असे वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालय हवे म्हणून तेव्हाच्या बॉम्बे प्रेसिडेन्सीच्या अखत्यारित गोरधनदास सुंदरदास या कपड्याच्या दानशूर व्यापाऱ्याने दान दिलेल्या परळच्या जमिनीवर १९२५ मध्ये पाहिले भारतीय वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालय उभे राहिले ते म्हणजे केईएम ! ‘स्वाभिमान’ हा जन्माचा हेतू असलेला गुणाचा अर्क पुढे केईएमशी जोडलेल्या प्रत्येकामध्ये म्हणूनच परीक्षेत, नवीन ठिकाणी कामावर रुजू होताना, मुलाखतीत, ‘ओ, सो यू आर केईमाईट?’ या प्रश्नामध्ये बराच गर्भितार्थ असतो. परदेशात तुम्ही ‘केईमाईट’ आहात हा कुठल्याही रुग्णालयात नोकरी मिळवताना कॉलर वरील मोठा स्टार असतो. केईएम कॅम्पसमध्ये तुम्ही डोळे, कान उघडे ठेवून काही क्षण वावरलात, किंवा या संस्थेच्या एका मध्यवर्ती ठिकाणी एक रात्र काढलीत तर तुम्हाला हा ब्रँड समजून घेता येतो. या आवारात शिक्षणाची, बुद्धिमत्तेची एक वेगळीच धुंदी तुम्हाला स्पर्श करते. इथथे तीन मजली पूर्णतः वातानुकूलित वाचनालय हे भारतातील सर्व वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयांतील सर्वोत्तम वाचनालय समजले जाते. ते २४ तास खुले असते आणि दिवसापेक्षा ते रात्री ओसंडून वाहत असते. मध्यरात्री तीन वाजता दोनेकशे मुले वाचनालयात आणि शे पन्नास आवारात अभ्यासाचे अड्डे असलेल्या इतरत्र ठिकाणी मानेवर खडा ठेवून जाडजूड पुस्तके पेलत ज्ञानसाधनेत दंग असतात. ‘मुंबई कभी सोती नही’ असे म्हणतात., पण ‘केईएम तुम्हे कभी सोने देता नहीं’ असे म्हणावे लागेल. वयाच्या पंचाहत्तरव्या वर्षी ‘नवीन काय?’ हे वाचणारे माजी विद्यार्थी इथे सर्रास आढळतात. नुकतेच प्रवेश घेतलेल्यांचा ते अजाणतेपणे राज्यभिषेक करून त्यांना ‘केईएम’ या बीजमंत्राची दीक्षा देतात. केईएमच्या विद्यार्थ्यांची दिनचर्या वेगळीच असते. देश पातळीवरील ऑल इंडिया पीजी एन्ट्रन्स (पदव्युत्तर परीक्षेत) भारतात दुसरा आलेला विद्यार्थीही निकाल बघून झाल्यावर चेहऱ्यावरची रेषही हलू न देता पुढच्या क्षणाला वाचनालयात लगेचच अभ्यासाला बसतो. कारण त्याला ‘एम्स’ किंवा पीजीआय या पुढच्या परीक्षेत पहिला किंवा दुसरा आल्याशिवाय समाधान मिळणार नसते. हा विद्यार्थीच केईएमचा बैंड उभा करत आला आहे. कोणी याला वेडेपणा म्हणेल पण ‘स्टे हंग्री… स्टे फूलिश’, हाच केईएमचा बँड आहे. हा वेडेपणा हीच केईएमची ओळख आहे. तुम्ही केईएममधून बाहेर पडता तेव्हा मॅड डॉक्टर बनून जाता. केईएम तुम्हाला केवळ हा मॅडनेसच देत नाही, तर तो बिनधास्तपणे मिरवण्याची सडाफटिंग वृत्ती, कला शिकवते आणि हिम्मतही देते. त्यातूनच ‘केईएम अॅटिट्यूड’ हे विशेषण वैद्यकीय विश्वात जन्माला आले. फास्ट लोकलच्या दारात उभे राहिले की तुम्ही आपोआप आत खेचले जाता, तसेच ‘बैंड केईएम’ तुम्हाला आपोआप कवेत घेते. केईएममधून बाहेर पडल्यावर तुम्ही कुठेच परत तसे अॅडजस्ट होऊ शकत नाही. या ब्रेडचा मोठा धोका म्हणजे ते तुम्हाला त्याचे व्यसन लावते. तुमचे शिक्षण संपले तरी ते तुमच्या मानगुटीवर बसते आणि प्रत्येकजण शिक्षण संपल्यावरही काही तरी कारण काढून काहीकाळ तरी इथे रेंगाळतोच. केईएमचे शिक्षक, इथली शिक्षणाची पातळी व बौद्धिक झिंग अनुभवल्यावर तुमच्या स्वतःच्या आयुष्यात एक अस्वस्थता येते. ही अस्वस्थतेची टोचणी सतत तुम्हाला गुणवत्ता आणि नैतिकता तुमच्या वैद्यकीय व्यवसायात प्रत्येक रुग्ण तपासताना जाणवत राहते. केईएमचे विद्यार्थी वेगळ्याच विश्वात राहतात आणि अव्यवहारी असतात, असा आरोपही बऱ्याचदा होतो. अध्यात्माची एक विशिष्ट पातळी ओलांडली की भोवताली काय होतेय, लौकिक विश्वात काय घडतेय याचे भान तुम्हाला राहत नाही, असे म्हणतात. केईएमचे विद्यार्थी बऱ्याचदा अशाच शैक्षणिक अध्यात्मात ढकलले जातात. हे शैक्षणिक अध्यात्म आणि त्यातून निर्माण होणारे ‘उपभोगशून्य स्वामी’ हाच ‘बैंड केईएम’ आहे. पहिले डीन जीवराज मेहता, डॉ. पी के सेन, डॉ. पुरंदरे, डॉ. बालिगा, आर्थर डीसा, डॉ. फड़के ते डॉ. रवी बापट, डॉ. शरदिनी डहाणूकर, डॉ. अविनाश सुपे अशा अनेक रत्नांची माळच वर्षानुवर्षे या ब्रेड भोवती गुंफली गेलेली आहे. केईएम तुम्हाला सरस्वतीचा दास बनवून सोडत असला तरी इतर अनेक क्षेत्रांत केईएम तुम्हाला साथ देते. उद्योग, राजकारण, साहित्य, शिक्षण संस्था, कला, प्रशासकीय सेवा अशा अनेक क्षेत्रात केईएमचे विद्यार्थी आहेत. तुम्ही क्षेत्र बदलले तरी केईएमपण आणि सर्वोत्तमाचा ध्यास तुमचा पाठलाग करत राहते. ‘एके काळी इथे असे होते’ अशा नॉस्टॅलजियाला या ब्रँडमध्ये स्थान नाही. ‘इथे कालही असेच होते, आजही तसेच आहे, उद्याही तसेच असेल’, हा आहे ब्रेड केईएम.

आपले विद्यापीठ किंवा जिथून मुख्य शिक्षण घडले त्याला ‘अल्मा मॅटर’ असा मूळ लँटीन, पण रूढार्थाने इंग्रजी शब्द प्रचलित आहे. या शब्दाचा खोलवर अर्थ आहे, ‘पोषण करणारी आई व तिची समर्पित मुले.’ ‘माझे सगळे घेऊन टाक’ म्हणणारे रामकृष्ण परमहंस आणि त्यातून परमहंसांना कैवल्यज्ञान देणारी आई भवानी यातून पुढे विवेकानंद हा ब्रँड शिकागोच्या जागतिक धर्म परिषदेत तळपला. अल्मा मॅटरचा खरा अर्थ हा आहे जो केईएम शिकवते. सूर्य कुठलाही भेदभाव न करता सर्वांना समान उर्जा देतो, तसे देशभरातील गोर-गरीब रुग्णांचे उपचार व वैद्यकीय शिक्षणाचे अव्याहत ज्ञान यात स्वतःला समर्पीत करणारी आई आणि 100 वर्षे तिच्यातून जन्मलेली डॉक्टर मुले, हाच आहे कल्ट ब्रेड केईएम.

Just as the true essence of beauty defies a simple definition, the concept of a ‘brand’ has confounded the corporate world for years. Countless moments, words, and intellectual resources have been spent attempting to define it, yet no one has been able to capture its essence succinctly. Many major brands have emerged and faded, highlighting the limitations of the traditional brand definition. This sparked a search for something beyond the conventional. And that’s where the term ‘cult brand’ comes into play. Grasping and explaining what a ‘cult brand’ truly is can be a challenging task in itself. A brand that fosters deep, long-term emotional investment from those who fall under its umbrella is a true ‘cult brand.’ This investment grows across generations, creating a connection that is difficult to trace back to its origin, and almost impossible to pinpoint where it ends. There is an inherent mystique in its success, and it remains timeless—this is the essence of a ‘cult brand.’ In the realm of education, and particularly in the medical field, the best example of such a brand is ‘KEM.’ While KEM is primarily the name of the main hospital, the true magic of these three letters lies in its crown jewel: Seth G. S. Medical College, also known as Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College. This institution casts a spell over the entire global medical community.

No matter how much time passes, the desire for a bright child in the family to become a doctor remains an unwavering aspiration in the minds of parents. No matter how much criticism may be levied against the notion that every intelligent child should become a doctor or an engineer, the moment a child shows promise, even in a family that criticizes this mindset, the thought inevitably crosses the parent’s mind: ‘This child should become a doctor.’ In a country with a population of over 1.25 billion, KEM stands as the institution that offers a gateway to the brightest students in every district, village, school, and home—a place where the best and the brightest are granted the opportunity to enter.

When understanding any brand, one must grasp its motto. When, at the age of eighteen, you are ranked first in your class and begin your medical education, there is a phrase at the entrance of the institution that immediately captures your attention. The phrase reads: ‘Genius alone lives, all else is mortal.’ This means, ‘Only sharp, thoughtful intelligence is immortal; everything else is transient.’ From the very first day, from the very first moment of entering KEM, this phrase marks the beginning of a meticulously planned intellectual and mental transformation—one that reshapes your entire being.

Imagine walking into a college to study Marathi literature and finding yourself under the tutelage of literary giants like P. L. Deshpande, Acharya Atre, V. V. Shirwadkar, or B. B. Borkar. What would that experience be like? This is exactly what students at KEM go through. Many of the authors whose books are considered the standard in medical literature were once teachers at this institution. Consequently, every student who enters KEM, believing themselves to be a master in their own right, undergoes a humbling intellectual transformation in the first year. They are soon confronted with the realization that ‘to fill a vessel, it must first be emptied,’ and this lesson is imparted by KEM in a way that stays with them for life—until old age, when even their teeth start to give way. This constant cycle of unlearning and learning is a cornerstone of the KEM experience, making it a crucial part of the institution’s ethos. When an extraordinary blend of brilliant students and teachers come together, surrounded by a community of intellectual giants, those who have experienced the radiance of the sun in its truest form will never yearn for the dim glow of any ‘LED light.’ As a result, those who emerge from KEM are seldom swayed by outside influences. This is why the image of ‘KEMites’ is often seen as arrogant or overbearing. However, in reality, their perceived arrogance is more accurately intellectual detachment—an attitude born of deep understanding and self-assurance.

A cult brand possesses a unique quality. When we look at examples such as Rajinikanth, Apple, Osho, and Salman Khan, one thing becomes evident: these brands create a clear distinction in the world between those who embrace them and those who do not. Similarly, in the medical field, a divide has existed since 1926—between ‘KEMites’ and everyone else. This division, this ‘cult,’ has been firmly established for 100 years. The very origins of this brand reveal the reasons behind its creation and the manner in which it rose to prominence.

In 1845, the establishment of JJ Hospital and Grant Medical College marked the beginning of formal medical education in India. Indian students who graduated from these institutions, went on to pursue postgraduate studies in England, and then returned to India, were soon barred from teaching at JJ. The message was clear: if you wished to study, it had to be under the British system. This exclusion of Indian professors deeply resonated with the educated Indian medical community. The desire for an institution where Indians would not only receive education but also be taught by fellow Indians led to the establishment of a medical college with this very vision. In 1925, on land generously donated by the philanthropist Gordhandas Sunderdas, a textile merchant, in the Parel area, the first Indian medical college led by Indians was founded—KEM. This took place at a time when the concept of ‘nationhood’ was still unfamiliar, yet the principle of ‘self-respect’ became the core value of KEM. This value, deeply embedded in the institution’s foundation, gradually became intrinsic to every individual associated with KEM. The enduring legacy of this foundational ethos continues to resonate in the spirit of each student who walks through its doors. In medical exams, it is generally advised not to engage in arguments with the examiners, as doing so almost certainly leads to failure. Yet, there are always those KEM students who, even in an MD examination, will confidently assert, ‘We are right—feel free to open the book if you disagree,’ displaying an attitude of ‘I haven’t eaten the beans, I won’t pick up the shells.’ Such students, ready to fail with pride if necessary, are driven by the same sense of self-respect that has been ingrained in KEM for 100 years. This ethos persists in all aspects of their lives, whether in exams, at a new workplace, or during an interview. When asked, ‘Oh, so you’re a KEMite?’ the question carries with it a deeper, often unspoken significance. Being a KEMite is like wearing a prominent star on your collar when applying for a job at any hospital abroad. Many of the firsts in Indian medical history—such as the first kidney transplant, the first heart transplant, the first Indian ECG machine, and the first test-tube baby—originated from this institution, where pioneers were born. This is why the ethos of ‘Be the first to do it or be the best at doing it’ stays with every KEMite long after they leave. Once you step out of KEM, the drive to either be the first in the world to accomplish something or the best in the world at it never truly leaves you.

If you spend a few moments with your eyes and ears wide open in the KEM campus, or even spend a night at one of the central locations within the institution, you will begin to understand what this brand truly represents. Just as the political atmosphere during election season gradually seeps into your skin and touches your breath, in this space, a unique intoxication of education and intellect embraces you.
